Cheap Flights to Lisbon: From $581, Just $173 Separates Every US Airport

Lisbon is the 13th-cheapest of the 40 European cities we price, at a $694 median, and it has a distinction no other big city in our grid shares: almost everyone in America pays roughly the same to get there. The gap between the cheapest US gateway, Boston at $581, and the most expensive, Philadelphia at $754, is $173, the 39th-widest of 40, which is a polite way of saying the second-flattest. For a city that is a hub for one airline and a spoke for seventeen others, that flatness is the finding.

Lisbon is also, from Boston, my usual second door into Europe after Keflavik, and the Azores are the reason it is sometimes the first. Compare that chart with London's, where the same axis stretches over five hundred dollars, and the shape of Lisbon's market is obvious. Boston, Miami and New York lead because TAP Air Portugal flies them nonstop; Los Angeles and San Francisco follow within forty dollars of New York because connecting carriers, Royal Air Maroc from Los Angeles among them, sell them cheaply; and then twenty gateways sit in a band from the low $600s to the mid $700s. Philadelphia at $754 is the only outlier, and it is an outlier by less than the price of a domestic flight.

Why so flat? Because Lisbon is a hub, and a hub carrier's economics work in the reader's favor here. 18 airlines sold Lisbon in our carrier grid. Where TAP flies nonstop from the East Coast it was the cheapest option outright: $581 from Boston, $629 from New York, $628 from Miami, nonstop each time. That is unusual. On most routes in our grid the cheapest fare is a connection, and a flag carrier's nonstop into its own hub is usually the expensive way; TAP into Lisbon from the East Coast is one of the few places where the nonstop and the floor are the same ticket.

It does not hold everywhere TAP flies. From Chicago, Air Canada through Toronto was cheaper than TAP's nonstop; from Washington, Royal Air Maroc through Casablanca at $724 beat TAP by a few dollars, and from Los Angeles Royal Air Maroc was the cheapest way into Lisbon at $621. Across its whole network TAP carries a $20 median premium over the cheapest carrier on the 131 routes it sells, which makes it the 8th-cheapest airline we rank, and our TAP business class review is the seat those Lisbon connections put you in when you pay for the front.

The Azores door

Azores Airlines sells Boston to Lisbon through Ponta Delgada at $687, which is more than TAP's nonstop, and I have booked it anyway, because the stop is the trip. Ponta Delgada is the closest European airport to the East Coast that anyone flies to nonstop, under five hours from Boston, and Azores Airlines lets you break the journey there on the way to the mainland. Two or three days on São Miguel on the way to Lisbon costs the fare difference and a hotel, and it is the single best use of a connection I know of on the Atlantic.

I have flown Azores Airlines in its business cabin, Boston to Ponta Delgada and on to Madeira, and the review is from that seat. The practical warning is the same as for any stopover: the Azores weather is Atlantic weather, and a connection that gives you a night on the island is a plan, while a same-day connection is a hope.

Lisbon or Porto

Porto against Lisbon is one of the arrival swaps we price on Fly Into a Different City, and the verdict is that it saves nothing worth the train: Porto is $11 cheaper on median, and the train between them is about three hours. TAP sells both from the East Coast. Fly into the one you are going to; if the trip includes both, price both directions, because an open-jaw into Porto and home from Lisbon often costs no more than a round trip into either.

Business class to Lisbon

The cheapest business fare into Lisbon in our grid was Azores Airlines from Boston through Ponta Delgada at $2,264, the stopover seat reviewed above. The connecting carriers that lead the business grid elsewhere, Icelandair through Keflavik in particular, sell Lisbon in business too, but at prices well above their London and Paris floors, because Iceland to Portugal is a long way to go around. What counts as a deal to Lisbon

Anything at or below $581 beats every gateway we priced. Because the spread is so narrow, a fare under $620 for a week is a good fare from almost anywhere in the country, which makes Lisbon one of the few cities where a national rule of thumb is not badly wrong.
