Which airline is cheapest to fly to Europe?

Across 985 fares priced on the same week (November 8–14, 2026), TAP Air Portugal had the lowest median premium at $0 above the cheapest option on each route, and was the outright cheapest on 41 of the 78 routes it flies. Icelandair was second at $0.

Is it cheaper to fly the national airline of the country you are visiting?

Usually not. Of 51 flag-carrier home routes priced across five US origins, 44 were beaten by another airline on that exact route in that exact week — the worst being Austrian at $1,047 above the cheapest way into VIE from BOS. The 7 that held are all a carrier's own nonstop into its own hub on a pair where no rival connects. The rule is not about distance: a flag carrier loses at home whenever somebody else can route you there through a hub of their own.

Why is a connecting flight often cheaper than a nonstop?

Because the airline selling it needs your seat more. SAS through Copenhagen and TAP through Lisbon price transatlantic tickets to fill connecting banks, so their alternative to selling cheaply is flying with an empty seat. The carrier that owns the nonstop is selling convenience and prices accordingly. That trade is worth taking on some routes and not others.

Are budget transatlantic airlines actually cheaper?

On the routes they fly, substantially. Norse Atlantic was $362 below ITA on New York to Rome and $405 below British Airways on Orlando to London, both nonstop. The catch is coverage rather than price: they fly few routes, so on most city pairs the question does not arise. Bags are also extra, which can close a $100 gap.

How were these airline fares compared?

Every fare is the same departure and return date in economy, November 8–14, 2026, searched on August 31, 2026. That is the point: the city-level grid takes the cheapest week per destination, which cannot compare carriers because two airlines might be quoting different weeks. Here a difference between two rows is a difference between two airlines and nothing else.

TAP Air Portugal and Icelandair are not close to the rest. Both are European flag carriers that price transatlantic seats to fill connecting banks through LIS and KEF, so their alternative to selling you a cheap ticket is flying with the seat empty. At the other end, Virgin Atlantic was $364 above the cheapest option, and Delta flew 40 of these 193 routes without being cheapest on a single one.

Austrian charged $1047 more than the cheapest way into VIE, and ITA $362 more than the cheapest way into Rome — beaten on its own capital by Norse Atlantic flying the same nonstop. Lufthansa charged $520 above the cheapest way into Frankfurt from Chicago. Only SAS into Copenhagen and Icelandair into Reykjavik were genuinely the cheapest way to reach the city they are named after, and both are carriers whose whole model is connecting traffic rather than point-to-point prestige.

Business class is where the carrier choice really bites

Everything above is economy, because that is where we have broad coverage. We also priced business on 5 routes for the same fixed week, and the two cabins do not behave alike. On every route, the gap between the cheapest and most expensive carrier is wider in business than in economy — often several times wider.

New York to Amsterdam is the clearest case: Icelandair through Keflavik at $2,373 against KLM nonstop at $11,981, five times the price for the same city pair in the same week. In economy that same route spans only 1.9×. If you are buying a business seat, which airline you choose is worth several times what it is worth in the back.

Common questions

Which airline is cheapest to fly to Europe?: Across 985 fares priced on the same week (November 8–14, 2026), TAP Air Portugal had the lowest median premium at $0 above the cheapest option on each route, and was the outright cheapest on 41 of the 78 routes it flies. Icelandair was second at $0.
Is it cheaper to fly the national airline of the country you are visiting?: Usually not. Of 51 flag-carrier home routes priced across five US origins, 44 were beaten by another airline on that exact route in that exact week — the worst being Austrian at $1,047 above the cheapest way into VIE from BOS. The 7 that held are all a carrier's own nonstop into its own hub on a pair where no rival connects. The rule is not about distance: a flag carrier loses at home whenever somebody else can route you there through a hub of their own.
Why is a connecting flight often cheaper than a nonstop?: Because the airline selling it needs your seat more. SAS through Copenhagen and TAP through Lisbon price transatlantic tickets to fill connecting banks, so their alternative to selling cheaply is flying with an empty seat. The carrier that owns the nonstop is selling convenience and prices accordingly. That trade is worth taking on some routes and not others.
Are budget transatlantic airlines actually cheaper?: On the routes they fly, substantially. Norse Atlantic was $362 below ITA on New York to Rome and $405 below British Airways on Orlando to London, both nonstop. The catch is coverage rather than price: they fly few routes, so on most city pairs the question does not arise. Bags are also extra, which can close a $100 gap.
How were these airline fares compared?: Every fare is the same departure and return date in economy, November 8–14, 2026, searched on August 31, 2026. That is the point: the city-level grid takes the cheapest week per destination, which cannot compare carriers because two airlines might be quoting different weeks. Here a difference between two rows is a difference between two airlines and nothing else.
