Turkish was cheaper on more of the matched business routes in our snapshot; Lufthansa had the higher-scoring best documented seat. The useful question is whether that seat is on your flight and whether the fare saving on Turkish comes with a connection you want.
Compare the seat separately from the fare
The recorded Lufthansa Allegris Business Class Suite scores 10 on seat; Turkish's highest-scoring recorded configuration scores 8. The seat scale measures a flat bed, direct aisle access and a closing door. It does not measure the entire flight experience or establish that either product was available at the fares below.
Lufthansa's Classic seat has direct aisle access without a Suite door. If a door is why you would pay more, confirm the named category and any selection charge. A seat score and an airline's network fare score do not cancel each other out: only your actual fare difference and preferences can settle that tradeoff.
On money it is not close

Turkish was cheaper on 275 of the 329 business routes where we priced both airlines. Lufthansa took 53.
The network-wide figures point the same way and further. Turkish carries a $186 median business premium over the cheapest carrier on each route it flies. Lufthansa carries $3,265. Those network medians summarize different route samples; subtracting them does not give the saving on your ticket.
Economy is closer but points the same direction: 246 to 104 across 352 routes.

This record describes a legacy paired-seat configuration. The aircraft family alone does not establish the cabin or seat on a particular booking; check the flight-specific seat map.
This door-equipped record describes the Allegris Business Class Suite, not every Allegris seat. Classic seats have direct aisle access but no suite door; seat-selection charges and available configurations vary. Confirm the named seat and operating flight before paying for it.

The cabin the retrofit is replacing, on the aircraft Turkish flies most from the US.
The 777-300ER is Turkish's principal US aircraft and carries a materially worse cabin. Retrofits to 1-2-1 are under way and the 'Crystal' business class with doors is not expected on retrofitted 777s until 2027-2028, so the same route and fare can produce either product well into 2027.
Lufthansa's recorded range includes the newer Allegris product and older configurations with lower seat scores. Turkish's recorded range also includes configurations with different aisle access. A shared airline name does not establish which seat will be on the operating flight.
The practical check is the seat map on your date, in both directions. Look for the feature you need: a bed, direct aisle access, a privacy door or paired seats for traveling together. An aircraft family alone may not identify the configuration. The cabin tables carry their original check dates; rollout plans mentioned in old notes are not a current fleet inventory.
If the Lufthansa itinerary confirms a seat you prefer, compare its actual fare difference with the benefit. If neither configuration can be confirmed, treat it as unknown. An unknown configuration is not a confirmed low-scoring seat. Decide what an established feature would be worth to you, then compare the actual available tickets instead of assigning a universal price to a seat upgrade.
Compare the journey through each hub
A Turkish connection through Istanbul and a Lufthansa connection through Frankfurt or Munich can be very different ways of reaching the same European city. Check the routing in the fare row, then inspect the current flight details. Our recorded connection airport is not a measure of total journey time.
For a destination west of Istanbul, pay particular attention to the additional flying and the arrival time. For a destination closer to Istanbul, do the same comparison without assuming it must be a detour. Geography is a reason to check the itinerary; the booked schedule decides how many hours it takes.
Write down the outbound and return journey durations, layovers and arrival times beside the two prices. Include baggage or seat-selection charges you will actually pay. If a lower fare uses a longer connection, decide whether that saving is worth the time on this trip. A cheap business seat is not automatically better value than an economy or business itinerary that fits your plans.
The connecting-hub guide gives context, but its hub averages cover different routes. They cannot establish what your connection should cost.
Booking either one on points
Both airlines are in Star Alliance. The Aeroplan guide explains one way to search partner awards, but the existence of a transfer route does not guarantee award space or identical prices. Search the exact flights and compare the points required, cash charges, cabin on each segment and cancellation terms.
If two available awards have the same total cost, Turkish's lower cash fare in our snapshot no longer establishes which award to choose. Aircraft, journey time and schedule still matter. If the award costs differ, compare each with a current cash ticket you would seriously consider buying.
Use the points versus cash calculator for that calculation. Do not treat either airline's network premium as the amount an award saves you. Confirm current transfer terms and award availability before moving points; a historical fare comparison cannot answer either of those questions.
Economy is a different, narrower question
Everything above is about business, because that is where the money and the seat scores diverge. In economy the two cabins are far closer to each other, and so are the fares.
Turkish took 246 of 352 shared economy routes to Lufthansa's 104. Their network median premiums are $0 and $127. Those medians use different route sets; their difference is not the saving on a matched ticket. Use the route rows for that comparison and the full carrier ranking for wider context. A cheaper quote on another carrier remains worth checking when its complete itinerary suits the trip. Neither airline's reputation can replace the actual fare, cabin and routing you can buy.
In economy, compare the current total fare, routing and baggage conditions. The business-seat discussion does not describe your cabin. In either cabin, the airline name alone does not settle whether a ticket is good value.
What this page will not tell you
Jon has flown Lufthansa in business on a Europe route. He has flown Turkish, but with the cabin unconfirmed, so nothing here makes a first-person claim about the Turkish seat, the service or the food.
That is the line this site holds everywhere: four of our seven review dimensions can be verified from specifications and fares, and three — service, food and ground recovery — cannot be known without being aboard. Every figure above is one of the four. A comparison that scored Turkish's crew from a spec sheet would be inventing the part readers most want to know.

Common questions
- Is Lufthansa or Turkish Airlines better to Europe?
- The answer depends on the flight and seat you can book. Our Lufthansa door record describes the Allegris Business Class Suite, not every Allegris seat. On the 329 historical business routes where we priced both airlines, Turkish was cheaper on 275. Those searches did not identify the seat attached to each fare; compare the actual itinerary and complete price.
- Which is cheaper, Lufthansa or Turkish Airlines?
- Turkish was cheaper on more matched business routes. Across the 329 business routes where we priced both in the same week, Turkish was cheaper on 275 and Lufthansa on 53. In economy the split is narrower: 246 to 104 of 352 routes.
- Does the aircraft change the answer?
- Yes. Our documented Lufthansa configurations include seat scores of 10 and 5, and Turkish configurations include 8 and 5. Check the seat map on your specific flight and date. We did not record the aircraft attached to each fare, so the lowest quote is not a promise of the best seat shown here.
- Is connecting in Istanbul worth it?
- It can be, if the fare saving compensates for the schedule and journey time on your trip. Compare the actual routing against the Lufthansa itinerary. Our observations identify the connection airport where recorded, but they do not measure travel time, layover duration or the cost of your time.
- Has Jon flown either of these?
- Lufthansa in business on a Europe route, so this page can speak to that cabin firsthand. Turkish he has flown, but with the cabin unconfirmed, so nothing here makes a first-person claim about the Turkish seat. Everything on Turkish is verified product data and fares — a different and more limited claim, and it is labeled that way throughout.
