Aeroplan to Europe: Match the Award to the Trip You Would Buy

Aeroplan is worth searching when its available flights fit your trip. The decision is whether the complete award costs less to you than an acceptable cash ticket. A large Star Alliance network, an attractive chart band or a high retail business fare cannot answer that question alone.

This guide separates the three pieces: what Aeroplan's published rules say, what our cash searches observed, and what you still need to verify in a live award search. Our editorial valuation is 1.4 cents per point. You can use another value if your balance and alternatives justify it; the method stays the same.

Read the correct chart row before comparing prices

Air Canada's official reward chart, checked October 13, 2026, separates North America–Atlantic travel by distance and operating-carrier group. Its figures are for one-way travel. Air Canada and selected partners have different pricing treatment from the other-partner rows, and availability still has to be found.

A connection can change the distance band. The operating airline matters, not just the airline name on the search result. Read the complete itinerary before applying a chart number from a headline or another traveler's booking.

If your trip is round trip, add the actual outbound and return points prices and the cash charges for both. Do not divide a round-trip cash fare by a one-way points price. If you only need one direction, obtain a one-way cash alternative rather than assuming half of a round-trip fare is available to buy.

An earlier version of this page called a 7.2-cent return a documented redemption after comparing a one-way award amount with a round-trip cash median. That was not a valid comparison or evidence of a bookable award. The claim has been removed.

This table uses the Star Alliance cash sample associated with Aeroplan in our model. The business median was $5,396, while the lowest observed business fare was $2,959. Those are different descriptions of the sample, not two quotes for your trip.

The observations cover round trips for November 8–14, 2026, collected August 31 – September 1, 2026. They do not contain live award inventory, award taxes or ticket restrictions. A cash seat sold by an airline does not establish that Aeroplan has access to an award seat on that flight. Our model also omits partners outside the alliance; it is not Aeroplan's complete partner directory.

Use the grid to identify airlines and routes worth checking. Then search Aeroplan and cash fares for your own dates. A cheaper acceptable cash flight on another alliance remains a valid alternative: you are choosing how to make the trip, not how to maximize a number inside one program.

Include the entire cash payment

Air Canada's flight reward policy, checked October 13, 2026, lists a partner booking fee and applicable taxes and charges. A claim about fuel surcharges alone does not tell you the total you will pay.

Record the final cash amount, its currency, and the cancellation conditions before comparing options. If the website offers several points-and-cash combinations, calculate each one separately. Using more points to reduce the cash payment can produce a different return from using points for the flight itself.

The basic comparison is:

Cents per point = 100 × (comparable cash fare − all award cash charges) ÷ total points used

For an illustrative round trip, suppose a cash ticket you would buy costs $2,400 and an award for a comparable journey costs 150,000 points plus $300. The award avoids $2,100 of cash spending, or 1.4 cents per point. These are invented inputs to show the math, not a fare or award we found. Change the cash alternative or the charges and the answer changes.

Check the journey, not just the cabin label

A business award can contain an economy connection. Confirm the cabin on each segment, especially the overnight crossing where the seat matters most. Look at connection time, airport changes, arrival time and whether both directions have an itinerary you would accept.

The fare grid cannot tell you the aircraft or seat on a priced flight. Our business-class comparison describes documented seats, while the booking's seat map helps identify what is scheduled for your departure. Neither makes an equipment assignment permanent.

This table is a shortlist of airlines with cash observations, not a list of available Aeroplan awards. Its median premiums cover different route samples. A lower network premium does not prove a lower price or better seat on your route.

Aeroplan or another program

If another program can book the itinerary you want, search that program independently. Partner access, points requirements, cash charges and cancellation conditions can differ even when two programs are associated with the same alliance. An airline's own award search is not evidence that a partner program has identical inventory.

For a traveler with existing Aeroplan points, using that balance may be reasonable at a value that would not justify transferring new bank points. For a traveler starting with flexible points, compare the opportunities being given up. A transfer ratio tells you how many airline points arrive; it does not establish the value of the redemption.

Before moving points

Keep a record of the flight numbers, dates, passenger count, cabins, total points and complete cash payment. Check the issuer's current Aeroplan transfer eligibility, ratio and expected processing time. Make sure the names and membership details meet both programs' requirements.

If you cannot find the return, solve that before committing to an attractive outbound. Combining an award in one direction with cash in the other can work, but compare the total with a round-trip cash ticket. The missing half of the journey can reverse the apparent saving.

Our transfer tables are recorded research, not a complete current directory. The program and issuer control the transaction. Do not move points merely because an editorial score ranks Aeroplan highly or a remembered chart price appears favorable.
