Cheap Flights to the UK: The Most Expensive Country We Price

The United Kingdom is the most expensive major country in our grid. All five British cities we price rank between 29th and 38th of 40 European destinations, and none of them is close to the cheap end.

It is also the most volatile. Three of the five widest gateway spreads in Europe are British cities, which means that where you fly from matters more for a trip to Britain than for a trip almost anywhere else.

$124 separates the cheapest British city from the dearest, which is a narrow band by the standards of this grid — Italy spans $95 and Spain $113 across fewer cities. Britain is not a country where picking a different airport rescues the fare.

For comparison, the cheapest European city we price is Stockholm at a $617 median. Every British city is at least $154 above it, and Belfast is $278 above.

Two reasons, neither of them fixable by booking

Air Passenger Duty. The UK levies a departure tax on passengers leaving British airports, charged by distance band and cabin. On a transatlantic round trip it is paid on the return leg and built into the fare you are quoted. It is a fixed cost that applies to every airline equally.

Heathrow's charges. Landing and passenger fees at Heathrow are among the highest of any major airport in the world, and they are passed through into the ticket.

Between them these set a floor under British fares that no amount of flexibility about dates or carriers gets under. It is worth knowing before you spend an evening searching: the money is in the tax and the airport, not in the airline.

London is the most volatile city in Europe

Orlando at $405 is not merely the cheapest fare into London — it is the cheapest fare into any British city from anywhere in America, by $199. It is also $121 below New York, which is the largest single-city gateway advantage anywhere in our data.

That result is a live illustration of the argument above. Orlando is a transatlantic leisure market with low-cost long-haul competition, and competition is the only thing in this dataset that reliably moves a British fare. Where it exists, the tax and the airport charges become a smaller share of a smaller total. Where it does not, they dominate.

Manchester and Edinburgh show the same volatility from the other direction: Manchester runs $604 from New York and $1,047 from Atlanta, and Edinburgh $628 from Orlando against $1,034 from Houston.

Dublin is the honest alternative

Dublin's median is $681 against London's $771 — $90 cheaper, on a grid where the whole British range is $124 wide.

Ireland is outside the UK's tax regime, and Dublin is a hub for a carrier that competes hard on transatlantic economy. For a trip that is genuinely about Britain, the Dublin routing adds a short flight or a ferry at the far end; whether that is worth $90 depends on the trip. For a trip that is about the British Isles generally, it is usually the better fare.

Belfast is the outlier worth avoiding

$895 median, 38th of 40, and $741 at its very best from Chicago. Only Mykonos and Santorini price worse across the whole of Europe.

Belfast is served thinly from the US, so almost every fare is a connection someone else prices, and the connection is usually through London or Dublin — meaning you pay the British or Irish leg anyway and add a segment. If Northern Ireland is the destination, pricing Dublin and the two-hour drive north is the obvious comparison to run.

How to book Britain

• Check Orlando even if you do not live in Florida. $405 into London is $121 below New York and $199 below any other British fare.
• Price Dublin against London. $90 on median, and Ireland is outside the UK departure tax.
• Do not expect city flexibility to help. The whole British range is $124 wide; the gateway range on London alone is $552.
• Treat $405 as the floor and $771 as normal for London. Anything under $600 into any British city is a good fare.
• For Belfast, price Dublin first. The difference is $214 on median.

When to go

• Late October to mid-December — the best combination of low fares and weather that is not meaningfully worse than November anywhere else in northern Europe.
• January to early March — as cheap or cheaper, and Britain in February is a genuinely low-season country.
• The fortnight around Christmas and New Year — a sharp spike worth avoiding unless the dates are the point.
• Late April to May, and September — the shoulders, and the best value once daylight and weather enter the calculation. May in Britain is the strongest window on this page.
• June to August — roughly double, and from a country already the most expensive we price this is the worst combination available.

Method, and its limits

Every fare was collected on August 30, 2026 from Google Flights, priced as a one-week round trip in economy for one adult, taking the cheapest available week in the following six months, from each of 26 US gateway metros. Rankings use the median across all 26 gateways, never the minimum: London's $405 from Orlando is exactly the kind of figure that would make a city look cheap when its typical fare is $771.

What this does not measure. Baggage is excluded, and most headline fares are the cheapest bucket, increasingly basic economy with no full-size carry-on. Air Passenger Duty and airport charges are described above from published policy, not from a figure in our dataset — we price the total fare, not its components.
