What AAdvantage points are competing with

A number in cents per point means nothing on its own. It only means something against the cash price of the same seat, and the seat has to be one AAdvantage can actually book. AAdvantage reaches oneworld. Below is what those airlines charged for a round trip to Europe in our own carrier grid, priced on August 31, 2026.

AllianceAirlines we priceRoutesMedian economyMedian business
oneworld7630$930$7,439

So the number to hold in your head is 66,000 points. That is what it takes to match the $930 median economy fare at our 1.4¢ valuation, across 630 routes from 26 US airports. An award priced under it beats buying the ticket. An award priced over it means you should buy the ticket and keep the points.

Run the same arithmetic against business class and it comes out at 531,000 points against a $7,439 median fare — and that is the number to distrust, including when we are the ones printing it. Business sells for 8× economy on these routes, so measuring one award against the business median instead of the economy one makes AAdvantage look 8 times better with nothing whatsoever changed about the ticket. That is how every eye-catching points valuation gets built. Ours is 1.4¢ because the fare worth dividing by is the one you would actually have paid.

Where you leave from moves this more than most people expect. These airlines price lowest out of Boston at a $803 median. The cheapest single fare we recorded on any of them was $564 on Royal Air Maroc.

How to get AAdvantage miles

No bank currency in our set reaches AAdvantage. Amex and Capital One both publish their partner lists and neither includes it. The only route in we hold is from a hotel currency, which makes AAdvantage a program you earn by flying or by holding its card rather than one you top up on the way to a trip.

  • Bonvoy AAdvantage · 3:1 · strength 18

The only route into AAdvantage in our data, and it carries no transfer bonus — 3:1 flat. It exists as a way to use hotel points you have, never as a reason to earn them.

Cards that earn AAdvantage

Airfare multipliers only. A card earning 4× on flights is a different tool from one earning 4× on groceries, and only one of them matters here.

Common questions

What is an AAdvantage point worth?
We value it at 1.4 cents for transatlantic redemptions, which ranks it 9 of 16 programs we track. Partner awards to Europe still price on a chart; AA metal is dynamic. That figure is deliberately conservative: it is what you can expect to get on dates you actually want, not the best redemption anyone found all year.
How many AAdvantage points is a flight to Europe worth?
At our 1.4¢ valuation, about 66,000 points matches the $930 median economy round trip on the oneworld carriers AAdvantage books — a figure taken from 630 routes out of 26 US airports in our own fare grid. Book an award under that and it beats paying cash; over it, pay cash and keep the points. The same arithmetic in business class gives 531,000 points against a $7,439 median, which is the figure to be skeptical of: business sells for 8× economy on these routes, so measuring an award against it makes any program look several times better without the ticket changing at all.
How do I earn AAdvantage miles?
The practical route for most people is transferring in from a bank currency. One partner transfers in, the strongest being Bonvoy at 3:1. The only route into AAdvantage in our data, and it carries no transfer bonus — 3:1 flat. It exists as a way to use hotel points you have, never as a reason to earn them.
Which credit cards earn AAdvantage?
1 in our set, led by AAdvantage (Citi) at 2× on airfare. We track airfare multipliers only, because that is the spend this site is about.

To decide whether to burn AAdvantage on a specific flight, run it through the Points vs. Cash Calculator, which compares your redemption against the 1.4¢ figure above.
